The Opposition, A Partnership for National Unity and Alliance for Change (APNU+AFC), on Tuesday, expressed their support for the town hall meeting hosted by the Caribbean Guyana Institute for Democracy (CGID) and reiterated their position the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) government discriminates against African, Indian and Indigenous Guyanese who they perceive to be supportive of the coalition.
The forum was held by CGID along with the Guyanese Organisations Against Racism (GOAR) and twenty-one other Guyanese Diaspora Organisations in the New York Tristate to address what they said are increased incidents of transnational repression crimes and attacks on Guyanese Americans in the United States by the PPP Government and the Guyana Police Force.
The event was held last Sunday in Brooklyn, New York, to a full capacity audience, spill over in the building, and on the streets. Attendees were addressed by United States Representative Hakeem Jeffries, New York Attorney General Letitia James, and others.
Jeffries told the attendees, “it’s very important that people of goodwill continue to stand up for the principle of equal protection under the law, the principle of liberty and justice for all, the principle of the preeminence of the rule of law, and the principle that racial injustice should not be tolerated anywhere in this world, including in Guyana.”
Attendees had the opportunity to interact with United States officials and shared their concerns for problems occurring back home.
“We are obviously concerned about any destabilising force on Guyana and clearly all of the allegations that have been made this evening suggest that there are problems and that they need to be looked at, they need to be examined,” said James.
Persons were also educated on their rights, and what constitutes transnational repression crime, and advised by the NYPD officers when they face such threats they should not hesitate to call the authorities. Attendants were assured law enforcement will investigate the matter and those found culpable will be held accountable.
The PPP government has been accused of practicing various forms of discrimination. Efforts by the government to defend the accusations have proven futile given the inability to refute evidence provided by the opposition and others.
