Below is a farm (backdam) to market road in Queenstown Village, Essequibo Coast. Note the government has asphalted the road only to a part. The asphalted part is where supporters of the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) live. The gravel road leads to the farm lands which are being cultivated by the original owners of the village. This road is the demarcation between Queenstown and Little Alliance which is considered a PPP/C stronghold. A number of persons on the front part of Queenstown, where there is asphalt road, have been squatting on the land.
Below is the farm to market road in Burma which was recently upgraded at the cost of $64 million. Farms in the Burma area are cultivated primarily by supporters of the government.
This month Queenstown marks its 181st Anniversary as a village.
At the recent Interfaith Thanksgiving Service to mark the event, Minister of Agriculture, Mr. Zulfikar Mustapha, told villagers: “We must beware of actions that are aimed at dividing us as a people and as a nation. We must dismiss those who set out to fan the flames of racism. We’ve seen what those actions have caused in other countries. Entire villages and tribes were slaughtered because of those actions. We must emulate the attitudes and actions of our fore parents who worked to ensure these villages were developed to benefit and uplift our people.”
