Last Thursday the e-ticketing traffic system went into effect. On the first day it was reported that of the almost 10,000 vehicles traversing the Mandela-Eccles four-lane highway, approximately 1,500 drivers committed traffic violations.

The e-ticketing is said to be part of the government’s effort to modernise the Guyana Police Force and ensure proper road usage. It is expected to improve efficiency in the drafting and dispatch of tickets, as well as the enforcement of penalties and fines.

The digitally obtained information will be transmitted to the Force and the Guyana Revenue Authority, and a traffic ticket issued and emailed to the driver based on the customisable parameters.

The license plate recognition function entails real-time license plate collection, driver and passenger snapshot, and high-powered infrared illumination.

The system is presently installed at the Eccles-Mandela four-lane highway and will be operational for 24 hours. It is also expected to be expanded to other heavily trafficked areas and, with its implementation, ultimately remove the physical presence of police officers to monitor traffic manually write tickets.
