Raphael Trotman
The Alliance For Change (AFC) announced the resignation of Mr. Raphael Trotman from the National Assembly. Trotman, who was a founding member of the party along with Mr. Khemraj Ramjattan and the last Mrs. Sheila Holder, will leave the Assembly next week.  The party was formed in 2005.

According to the AFC’s release, Trotman had indicated before its National Conference he would not be available for nomination as he would be resigning mid-term in the life of the present Assembly, which commenced in 2020, to allow for rotation and space for new leadership training.

Trotman has been a Member of Parliament (MP) since 1998, first serving for the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR).  He was elected Speaker in the 10th Parliament.

As a parliamentarian, Trotman served on several Standing and Select Committees, including – Constitution Reform, Security, Foreign Affairs and Natural Resources, and contributed to the passage of scores of critical pieces of legislation. He led parliamentary delegations to international conferences and meetings in the United Kingdom, Sri Lanka, Peru, Azerbaijan, Bolivia, Barbados, Mexico, and New Zealand, among others.

The outgoing MP also served as Minister of Governance and Minister of Natural Resources in the A Partnership for National Unity and Alliance for Change Government (2015-2020). As Minister of Natural Resources he helped navigate the emerging oil and gas sector, including increasing the royalty from one per cent (1 %)- as inherited by the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) government- to two per cent (2%).

According to the party, albeit leaving the National Assembly, Trotman will remain a member of the National Executive Council (NEC) of the party, continue to provide counsel to the party leadership on a range of national and regional developments, and render his expert counsel on the nascent oil production sector.
