| Authorities of the Guyana School of Agriculture (GSA) Anna Regina on the Essequibo Coast have broken down the sheep and goats pen for a private individual to build a call centre. The destruction has resulted in the animals wandering around the GSA compound, and in neighbouring yards, with nowhere to sleep. These animals form part of the practical (hands-on) training for students attending the Anna Regina campus. The pen is adjoining the school.
The person who is building the call centre has political connections. One villager said he saw the sheep and goats running around, noticed their pen was being demolished, and on inquiry learnt a man from Johanna Cecilia, with political connections, wants the land to build his call centre. “How can this be right,” he asked. CARICOM, headquartered in Guyana, has set a goal to reduce the region’s Food Import Bill by 25 percent by 2025. If agriculture and meat are important to this reduction and students are being trained to help achieve this goal, it is only fair they be given all the support, said another villager. Villagers are calling on President Ali to stop the building of the call centre on the GSA’s site and to rebuild the sheep and goats’ pen.
