The Cyril Potter College of Education (CPCE) has reported processing more than 4,700 applications for the 2022 year, with increasing submissions coming from hinterland students. Vice Principal of Development, Tamsin Henry Granville told the Department of Public Information that the college 2022 applications represent an increase on 2021 by some 2,620. Ms. Granville, while noting the high increase, also said the influx is influenced by the number of untrained teachers who are now required to become trained come September. In 2021, the CPCE launched its online training programme in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic. Trainees, however, are still required to attend face- to- face sessions in order to complete their prevocational and secondary academic courses. The college is offering professional development sessions to lecturers and trainees in an effort to build capacity in technology. CPCE has 11 hinterland or riverine centres in Regions One, Five, Seven, Eight, Nine and Ten which offer teacher upgrade and trained teachers’ certificate programmes. The centres support efforts to make teachers training accessible to communities across Guyana and ensure teachers are better equipped to teach the curriculum. A two-year associate degree programme is expected to be added to the current programmes offered. Pre-service students from hinterland communities in Regions One, Seven, Eight and Nine can assume residency at the college, to continue and access their training. To ensure in-service, students are afforded the same opportunities as their pre-service counterparts and the college is working to bring the in-service teachers to the CPCE when school closes. They will then be able to access courses that were missed from semesters one and two in order to complete their training.
