Interrogating Cronyism in Education

Dear Editor

Recently I went to the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall at Home Stretch Avenue for a meeting. There I discovered to my chagrin that the national colours painted on the sign board outside of Sports Hall was Upside –  Down. I then proceeded to the Cenral Housing and Planning Authoriity Annexe at Brickdam. At that location i experienced a double wammie. Like the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall the national colours were also displayed Upside – Down and the word Annex instead of Annexe was boldly displayed on the front of the building.

Did someone forget the ‘ e ‘ or the paint was in short supply? Over five decades ago i learned that annexe refers  to a building attached to a larger one or forming a subordinate part of a main building, while  annex is to take possession of, to annex  territory; e.g. There was a meeting at the Police Officers’ Mess Annexe; Russia is fighting to annex Ukraine. I was flabbergasted. No wonder sports in Guyana is not doing well and there is chaos at the Housing Authority. I wonder if persons in authority are not looking up or are not paying attention to details or they are just flippant about our national colours. It is easy to remember how to display the national colours. The red must always be displayed on the top. My information is that the national colours are prominently displayed on several government buildings and elsewhere in an improper manner. Could persons in authority please correct this sad state of affairs? Let us respect our national colours

May God help Guyana.
Yours respectfully
Clinton Conway
Assistant Commissioner of Police
