Cop stabbed in back while trying to keep the peace

A police constable is in serious condition at the Georgetown Public Hospital after he was stabbed by one of two men who were fighting at Beterverwagting, East Coast Demerara Thursday night.

Police in a press release said they are investigating the alleged wounding committed on Marcos Richmond, age 20 yrs, a Policeman of Beterverwagting, East Coast Demerara, which occurred around19:40hrs at Quamina Street, Beterverwagting, ECD, reportedly by a 35-year-old suspect who is currently under arrest.

Enquiries revealed that the Police Constable was walking along the said road on his way home from work when he saw the suspect and another male having an altercation, the Constable approached them in a bid to keep the peace. However, the suspect became annoyed and related to the constable that the altercation is none of his concern after which the policeman left for his home.

Subsequently, the suspect, armed with a knife approached the constable from behind and dealt him two stab wounds to his lower back and the back of his neck, the police release stated.

He was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation by a family member and is admitted in a serious but stable condition.
The suspect was later arrested and is in police custody assiting with the investigation.
