The US Department of State – Bureau of Consular Affairs – has issued another Travel Advisory, urging US citizens to reconsider travel to Guyana due to crime and COVID-19.

In the advisory, dated Tuesday, March 22, 2022, the US indicated that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued a Level 3 Travel Health Notice for Guyana, indicating a high level of COVID-19 in the country.

“Your risk of contracting COVID-19 and developing severe symptoms may be lower if you are fully vaccinated with an FDA authorized vaccine,” a section of the advisory read.

The health advisory comes days after the Guyanese Government removed a number of COVID-19 restrictions on social activities and gatherings. Persons operating in Guyana are also no longer required to show proof of vaccination when entering public buildings.

As of March 22, 2022, Guyana has recorded 63,202 COVID-19 cases. However, only 7 were recorded within the last 24 hours signaling a significant reduction in new infections. According to the Ministry of Health, only one person is in the COVID-19 Intensive Care Unit (ICU), while 11 persons are in institutional isolation and another 111 persons in home isolation. A total of 1,226 persons have succumbed to the virus since the pandemic hit Guyana in March, 2020.

CRIME
Meanwhile, in the area of crime and security, the US State Department has cautioned American citizens that crime is of major concern in the country. “Violent crime, including murder and armed robbery, is common, especially at night. Local police often lack the resources to respond effectively to serious criminal incidents,” the US said in its country summary on Guyana.

The US State Department said if citizens so desire to travel to Guyana, they should be vigilant when visiting banks or ATMs, avoid walking or driving at nights, do not physically resist any robbery attempt, and do not display signs of wealth, such as wearing expensive watches or jewelry. Persons are also advised to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Programme (STEP).
