…as Granger Harmon step down

Former President David Arthur Granger has stepped down as Chairman of the A Partnership for National Unity (APNU), making way for Leader of the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR), Aubrey Norton.
APNU’s General Secretary, Joseph Harmon will also demit office within seven days. APNU, in a statement, said Granger and Harmon’s decision to resign their various posts was announced during a meeting of the EXCO on Tuesday – the first for 2022.
“The EXCO requested that Mr. Joseph Harmon continues as General Secretary for a period of seven days to facilitate the smooth transition to a new General Secretary. However, Mr. David Granger demitted office with immediate effect paving the way for the election of a new Chair,” the statement read.
Norton was then elected Chair of the APNU. It is expected that under Norton’s leadership there will be a continuation and development of coalition politics in Guyana.

In addition to Granger, Harmon and Norton, Jaipaul Sharma of the Equal Rights and
Justice Party, Vincent Henry of the Guyana Action Party, Tabitha Sarabo-Halley,MP of
Guyana Nation Builders and Keith Scott of the National Front Alliance were among the officials present at the meeting. The Executive Members thanked the outgoing Chair and General Secretary for their role inadvancing the idea of the APNU to what it is today. It was noted that their astute leadership saw the growth of the APNU and the acceptance of thepopulace to coalition politics which resulted in an increase in votes from 2011 to 2020. Norton, who was elected Leader of the PNCR last December, is on a mission to return to the National Assembly as a Member of Parliament and ultimately become the Leader of the Opposition. Currently, Harmon is the country’s Opposition Leader. The two leaders – Norton and Harmon – together with the Granger – the Leader of the List of Representatives and the Executives of the Alliance For Change (AFC) are locked in meetings regarding the issue of leadership. The PNCR forms a significant part of the Coalition, and it is the belief of its Central Executive Committee (CEC) that Norton should be Leader of the Opposition.
