Women take pride in their hair and have dedicated much time to hair grooming. This is informed by a feeling that one’s hair plays a significant part in defining beauty- whether worn long or short, natural, permed, with fillers, or in protective hairstyles.

Each hair type/texture has its own beauty and whatever style a woman wears, once well-groomed, is beautiful. That being said, there is a cultural resurgence among black women to wear their hair naturally.

Black women particularly have been on several hair journeys, some in part influenced by societal pressure that the more the texture of their hair or style appears Caucasian/Asian the prettier it is.

In 2019, Essence magazine reported that African-Americans spend US$1.2 trillion each year on their hair and that number is projected to rise to US$1.5 trillion by 2021. If this spending is in the United States alone, it could only be imagined what the global spending would reflect. Evidently, catering to Black women’s hair needs is a thriving business.
