Let the nation forge ahead with development with a human face

Dear Editor,

There is a section (about 1000 metres) of the “New Road” (on the Line) between Voor-zig-tig-heid and Spring Hall in Mahaica, East Coast Demerara, where water accumulates during heavy rainfall. Surely, the road engineers must have taken note of this occurrence, and others like it, with a view to remedy them, thereby contributing to road safety as well as the longevity of the roads.

In addition, along the same stretch of road at Mahaica there are two deep holes that reappear soon after they are filled by the authorities: One at the Good Hope entrance and the other closer to Spring Hall. Quite recently, another hole has started to emerge at the Jonestown entrance. Here is an appeal for the authorities to seal these holes permanently.

In closing, it is noted that it is customary to name streets/roads after persons who have given service to the socio-political landscape of the country. With this in view, here is a suggestion of names for consideration for the naming of two significant infrastructural projects:

The Ogle to Eccles road link: EITHER:

Janet Jagan Highway          OR

Desmond Hoyte Highway

and

The new Demerara River Bridge: EITHER:

Samuel Hinds Bridge

OR

Walter Rodney Bridge.

Let the nation forge ahead with development with a human face.

Yours faithfully,

Bernel L. H. Wickham.
