52 new Covid cases, one death

On a day when it recorded 52 new Covid-19 infections, the Ministry of Health here has also announced the death of a 71-year man bringing the total fatality from the virus to 207.

The 71-year-old male from Region Four (Demerara-Mahaica) died while receiving care at a medical facility. The MOH expressed sincerest condolences to the family of the deceased and undertaken to make every effort to provide all the necessary support during this difficult time to render any assistance needed.

The Ministry is also appealing to the general public to respect the confidentiality of the deceased and his family and to allow them to mourn their tragic loss in peace.

The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Guyana surpassed 9,000 on Friday and is now at 9 121. According to the Ministry’s statistical report, five persons remain in the COVID-19 ICU while 32 persons are in institutional isolation and another 591 persons in home isolation. Eight persons, the Ministry said, are in institutional quarantine.

To date, 4,694 males have contracted the virus in Guyana while 4, 427 females have been tested positive. Collectively, 8,287 persons have recovered from the disease.

Region Four has the highest number of confirmed cases with 4,215 followed by Region One with 1025 and Region Seven with 787 cases. Region Two has recorded the lowered number with 239.

Guyana recorded its first COVID-19-related death on March 11, 2020, under then APNU+AFC Government. Data shows that from March 11 to August 2 when the coalition demitted Office – a period of six months — the previous Administration recorded a total of 21 COVID-19 related deaths. However, from August 4, 2020, to March 12, 2021 – eight months — the country recorded 185 additional COVID-19 deaths.
