The Guyana Prison Service says its records show that remanded Opposition Leader Azzruddin Mohamed spent approximately nine hours and 20 minutes outside his holding area on Sunday, November 1, disputing claims that he was confined for “23 hours and 50 minutes” that day.
In a statement detailing his prison regime for October 31 and November 1, the service said Mohamed received family and attorney visits on Saturday and made a 16-minute telephone call to a relative.
On Sunday, according to the service, he attended welfare counselling, received a two-hour attorney visit, made three family telephone calls totalling approximately 29 minutes, and received meals delivered by relatives. He was also attended to by a medical officer, given cough medication, and provided with reading and writing materials.
The service further stated that Mohamed reported having no complaints during a 7 p.m. visit by Director of Prisons Nicklon Elliot.
Lawyers for Azruddin Mohamed categorically dispute the statement by the Guyana Prison Service and challenge the institution to invite journalists to view the facilities and environment in which opposition leader Mohamed is being held.
