Today, as the Alliance For Change (AFC) marks its 21st anniversary, we reflect on a journey of triumphs and disappointments, achievements and setbacks, and the many lessons that have shaped our experience.

Twenty-one is the age of maturity into adulthood. For the AFC, this milestone calls for honest reflection, renewed purpose and a clear-eyed appreciation of the road ahead. We take pride in our resilience and our determination to remain forward-looking, even in the face of profound challenges.

Since our formation in 2005, the AFC has been an important part of Guyana’s political journey. We have experienced the opportunities of success and the sobering lessons of disappointment. We embrace both, recognising that our future depends on our willingness to learn, adapt and respond to a rapidly changing socio-political and economic landscape. We take pride in our contributions to nation-building that have brought us to this point as an emerging petro-state.

The AFC has always been resilient. We remain forward-looking because we understand that political relevance cannot be sustained by history alone. It must be earned anew through ideas, leadership, public engagement and a genuine appreciation of the changing aspirations of our people.

Our future cannot be built simply by seeking to restore what once was. We must recover our standing, not as the same party we were yesterday, but as a stronger, wiser and more responsive movement—one that has adapted to Guyana’s rapidly changing socio-political landscape. The circumstances that shaped our emergence have evolved, our society has changed, and the expectations of citizens have grown. We must adapt and evolve with them.

Our task is not simply to reclaim our former standing, but to emerge as a renewed and more responsive political movement. We must draw on our experience while embracing new ideas, new approaches and a new generation of Guyanese whose aspirations will shape our country’s future.

This process of renewal requires self-reflection, organisational strengthening, generational inclusion and a willingness to embrace new approaches to political engagement. It requires us to reconnect with communities, engage young people and women, listen to workers and entrepreneurs, and develop credible solutions to the challenges facing ordinary Guyanese. Above all, it requires us to demonstrate through our conduct that public service is a responsibility, not a privilege.

On this anniversary, we pay special tribute to our founding members, whose vision, commitment and courage brought the AFC into existence. We honour those who have passed on and those who, for various reasons, are no longer with us. Their contributions form part of our collective history, and their sacrifices should never be forgotten. We also extend our sincere gratitude to every member, supporter, volunteer and well-wisher who has stayed the course through difficult and uncertain times. Your loyalty and perseverance are a testament to the enduring value of the ideals we share.

Twenty-one years have taught us that setbacks need not define us; what matters is our capacity to learn, rebuild and move forward with humility and determination.

As we celebrate this milestone, we do so with pride in our past, honesty about our present and confidence in our ability to renew ourselves.

The AFC at 21 remains resilient, remains hopeful and remains committed to the work of building a better Guyana.  Happy 21st Anniversary to the Alliance For Change.
