The Human Rights Council is the UN’s principal intergovernmental body responsible for promoting and protecting human rights worldwide. Based in Geneva, Switzerland, it addresses human rights violations, examines country-specific situations and considers broader issues through debates, resolutions and investigations.

The council has 47 member states, elected by the General Assembly through a secret ballot. Seats are allocated among regional groups to ensure geographical representation, and members serve three-year terms.

Member states are expected to uphold high standards in the promotion and protection of human rights and to cooperate fully with the council’s work.

The incoming members will join the council amid continuing international concerns over armed conflicts, displacement, discrimination and restrictions on civil liberties.
