Guyana Police Force Assistant Superintendent Glenfield Campbell has joined the Regional Security System (RSS) Coast Guard Commanders Forum, strengthening Guyana’s representation in a regional mechanism dedicated to maritime security and operational cooperation.

Campbell was inducted alongside Assistant Superintendent Reece Auguste of the Royal Saint Lucia Police Force and Lieutenant Colonel Alando Michael of the Antigua and Barbuda Defence Force during the RSS Coast Guard Commanders Conference in St Vincent and the Grenadines.

The induction brings additional security personnel into a forum designed to improve coordination, facilitate the exchange of expertise and strengthen collective responses to threats across Caribbean waters.

The RSS announced the appointments as part of its continuing efforts to foster closer partnerships among regional security agencies. The conference was chaired by Commander Deon Henry of the St Vincent and the Grenadines Coast Guard Service. Also pictured at the event was Lieutenant Commander Rolerick Sobers, the RSS Regional Maritime Officer.

Strengthening Caribbean maritime security

The Forum operates within the wider framework of the RSS, a regional security organisation that coordinates cooperation among member states on shared security challenges.

These include illicit drug trafficking, transnational organised crime, maritime border protection, search and rescue, and other activities requiring coordinated action across national jurisdictions.

Because criminal networks and maritime threats frequently cross territorial boundaries, regional cooperation is important for improving intelligence-sharing, surveillance, joint operations and the deployment of security resources.

The RSS supports coordinated maritime patrols and operations with regional and international partners, helping member states respond to threats that individual countries may struggle to address alone.

Guyana’s regional commitment

Guyana formally joined the RSS in September 2022, expanding its participation in a regional security arrangement established to strengthen collective responses to security challenges.

The organisation comprises eight member states: Guyana, Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Dominica, Grenada, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.

Guyana’s participation is significant given its extensive coastline, offshore energy industry, maritime trade and responsibility for protecting its territorial waters and natural resources. Cooperation with neighbouring states and regional security agencies provides opportunities to exchange operational knowledge and strengthen responses to cross-border threats.

Campbell’s induction places a Guyana Police Force officer within a forum focused specifically on maritime security leadership and cooperation. His participation also creates an opportunity to strengthen professional links with counterparts responsible for protecting the waters of other RSS member states.

The addition of Campbell, Auguste and Michael reflects the organisation’s emphasis on shared responsibility for regional security. As Caribbean countries confront threats that extend beyond national borders, effective coordination among their security services remains essential to protecting maritime space and supporting regional stability.
