The Government of Trinidad and Tobago will accord calypso icon Dr. Slinger “Mighty Sparrow” Francisco an official state-assisted funeral as the country prepares to honour one of the Caribbean’s most influential musical figures.

Culture and Community Development Minister Michelle Benjamin made the announcement in the House of Representatives following Sparrow’s death in New York on Sunday, September 27, at age 91.

Benjamin said a committee has been established to work with Sparrow’s family to ensure he receives “a funeral fit for a legend.”

“Under the direction of the Prime Minister, an official state-assisted funeral will be held, a date to be fixed.”

The Government will also dedicate Calypso History Month to Sparrow’s memory and stage a national tribute in collaboration with the Trinbago Unified Calypsonians’ Organisation (TUCO).

Books of condolences will be opened at several locations, including regional corporations, the National Academy for the Performing Arts, the Southern Academy for the Performing Arts, the Shaw Park Cultural Complex in Tobago and the Ministry’s main office.

Benjamin described Sparrow’s passing as the loss of “one of the greatest cultural figures this country has ever produced,” formally recognising him as:

“Dr Slinger Francisco O.R., the Mighty Sparrow, the Calypso King of the World.”

She extended condolences to Sparrow’s family, Trinidad and Tobago and Grenada, where he was born.

“We grieve with you for a son we have shared for 90 years.”

Sparrow’s career spanned roughly seven decades, during which he helped establish calypso as a powerful vehicle for social commentary, political criticism and Caribbean cultural expression.

Benjamin recalled his breakthrough in the 1956 Carnival competitions with his celebrated calypso “Jean and Dinah.” Over the decades, Sparrow addressed politics, social conditions, relationships, race, Caribbean identity and the everyday experiences of ordinary people.

Reflecting on his role as a social commentator, Benjamin said:

“He sang the truth when others kept quiet. He stood up to those in power, that he did, and he held up a mirror so ordinary people could see their own lives in his songs.”

Sparrow earned international recognition and influenced generations of calypsonians and Caribbean musicians. Benjamin said his greatest honour, however, was the enduring affection of the public.

“It was the way a Sparrow song could play and the entire gathering would know the words.”

His death has prompted tributes across the Caribbean, underscoring the reach of a career that extended well beyond Trinidad and Tobago’s Carnival.

As the country prepares to bid farewell to the calypso legend, Benjamin closed her tribute by reflecting on the permanence of his contribution.

“That mighty man, the Mighty Sparrow, has taken his final bow. His music and his legacy remains, and it is ours. May his soul rest in eternal peace.”
