We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) Member of Parliament Dr. André Lewis has resigned from the National Assembly amid an ongoing police investigation into serious allegations against him, with Nightly News breaking the story and reporting that the allegations are sexual in nature and involve a person who was a minor at the time of the alleged conduct.
Lewis formally submitted his resignation on October 2 in a letter addressed to Speaker of the National Assembly Manzoor Nadir. He said the resignation took effect upon receipt and was prompted by the allegations and the ongoing investigation.
Nightly News reported that Lewis had been arrested and taken to the Vreed-en-Hoop Police Station, where he was questioned by investigators before being released. The Guyana Police Force has not publicly disclosed details of the investigation or indicated whether charges will be brought.
Lewis made clear in his resignation letter that stepping down was not an admission of wrongdoing or a finding of guilt.
“Given the seriousness of the matter and the responsibilities attached to public office, I believe that resigning from the National Assembly is the appropriate course of action while the relevant processes are ongoing,” Lewis stated.
He said he remained committed to allowing the relevant authorities to conduct their investigation.
The resignation was submitted under Article 156(1)(a) of the Constitution of Guyana. Lewis also expressed gratitude to the people of Guyana and WIN for the opportunity to serve in Parliament.
Nightly News also reported that WIN Leader and Representative of the List Azruddin Mohamed had formally notified Speaker Nadir of the allegations involving Lewis.
Lewis entered the National Assembly as a first-time WIN parliamentarian following the 2025 General and Regional Elections. He had served as a member of the opposition since taking his seat after the elections.
His resignation removes him from the National Assembly while the police investigation continues.
At this stage, no charge or finding of guilt against Lewis has been publicly reported. The allegations remain under investigation.
