A female student of Corentyne Comprehensive High School in Region Six has reportedly suffered a serious injury on the school compound and now requires surgery in Georgetown, prompting urgent questions about the safety of the school’s drainage system.

The student’s injury is reportedly linked to an open section of the drainage system on the school compound, which has been described as a potential physical hazard to students moving around the premises.

According to a complaint raising concerns about conditions at the school, the opening remains exposed despite the reported injury.

The complaint does not seek to establish blame before all the facts are known. Instead, it questions whether sufficient attention was given to a potentially dangerous condition and whether appropriate measures were taken to protect students from the hazard.

The reported need for surgery has intensified concerns about the seriousness of the incident.

“The seriousness of the situation is now underscored by the fact that a student has reportedly been injured and requires surgery in Georgetown.”

The complaint further argues that once a dangerous condition is identified on a school compound, reasonable steps should be taken to prevent students from coming into contact with it.

“A physical hazard on a school compound is a matter of student safety. Once such a hazard has been identified, reasonable steps should be taken to prevent students from being exposed to unnecessary danger.”

The concerns over the drainage system have also raised questions about the priorities of the school administration, particularly amid reports of increased disciplinary attention being directed toward students’ hairstyles.

According to the complaint, students have reportedly been instructed to cut their hair and warned that refusal could result in a three-day suspension. They have allegedly been told that continued non-compliance could lead to further suspension and eventually transfer to another school.

In one reported case, a student was allegedly told by a teacher that he would have to cut his hair or have it plaited. His mother subsequently plaited the student’s hair, but he was reportedly later told that the hair still had to be cut.

There are also allegations that teachers who encourage students to retain or maintain their hair could face disciplinary action.

The complaint acknowledges that schools have a responsibility to establish and enforce reasonable standards governing student appearance, dress and conduct. However, it questions whether suspension is an appropriate response where students are reportedly making efforts to keep their hair neat and comply with school expectations.

Suspension can result in students missing classroom instruction, falling behind in their studies and having to make up missed work.

The complaint also refers to a previous incident involving a student who reportedly attended school wearing track pants and a white T-shirt because her school uniform was wet. The student was allegedly kept in a separate room and prevented from entering an examination.

The issue, according to the complaint, is not whether school rules should be enforced, but whether they are applied with sufficient consideration for individual circumstances.
