…shippers contacted, assisting with probe

Investigations done by the Customs Anti Narcotic Unit and the Guyana Revenue Authority confirmed that the two containers that were intercepted with cocaine in Jamaica this week were left a city wharf and it is suspected that the drugs were put on them after they were scanned.

“Investigations revealed that security checks were done by the Guyana Revenue Authority personnel prior to the departure of the shipment and it is suspected that the containers may have been contaminated after those security checks were done. Shippers relating to relevant consignments have been contacted and are assisting with the joint investigation into the matter,” CANU said in a statement Wednesday.

On Tuesday, the Village Voice News shared a report from the Jamaica Observer which stated that the containers were found with over 300 pounds of cocaine on Monday at the Kingston Freeport Terminal Limited (KFTL). According to reports, the drug was found in two of six transhipment containers that arrived in the island from Guyana en route to Haiti and China.

New information provided by CANU revealed that one container containing logs of lumber was found to contain a box with parcels of suspected cocaine and the second container contained multiple duffle bags and parcels of suspected cocaine.  Narcotics Police, accompanied by members of the Jamaica Customs Contraband Enforcement Team, reportedly found a total of 122 packages (110 in one and 12 in another), each with compressed white substance resembling cocaine. The total weight of the drugs is approximately 139.4 kilograms (307 pounds) and the estimated street value is US$6.59 million. No one has been arrested in connection with the seizure.
