Guyana’s Ceili Peterson has added another international medal to her 2026 campaign, capturing bronze in the women’s under-49kg taekwondo division at the South American Games in Santa Fe, Argentina, on Thursday, September 24.
Peterson reached the medal podium after defeating Argentina’s Priscila Rodriguez 2-0 in the bronze-medal contest. The Guyanese fighter won the opening round 12-6 before producing a dominant 16-3 performance in the second round to secure third place.
Her route to the podium began with a commanding quarter-final victory over Bolivia’s Jireh Hurtado. Peterson won the first round 14-0 and followed with a 9-0 victory in the second to advance.
Her pursuit of the gold medal ended in the semi-final against Colombia’s Andrea Ramírez. Peterson lost the opening round 1-0 and the second 9-6, sending her into the bronze-medal contest.
She responded by delivering her strongest performance of the medal rounds against Rodriguez, controlling the contest and closing out the bout emphatically.
The medal represents another significant international result for Peterson, who also captured bronze in the women’s under-49kg division at the Central American and Caribbean Games in Santo Domingo in July. That performance gave Guyana its first podium finish at those Games.
Thursday’s result therefore adds a second major international medal to Peterson’s 2026 record and strengthens her position among Guyana’s emerging international combat-sports athletes.
The South American Games are being staged in Argentina, with Guyanese athletes competing across several disciplines as the country seeks international success.
