…says house was built from Box-hand savings
The home of a pensioner at Kingelly Village West Coast Berbice was gutted by fire in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
Ms Mary Harte said that the fire broke out around 04:45hrs and her modest wooden two bed-roomed home was completely gutted despite efforts of the Fire Service.
The origin of the fire was suspected to be electrical.
The octogenarian recalled building her home some fifty years ago.
She said: “Ow me throw box fuh get money for build this house.”
She said: “I was next door and neither my self or relatives were able to save anything from the blaze.”
Ms. Harte who is currently staying with relatives estimated her losses to be in the vicinity of over three million dollars.
She said that she is fortunate to be surrounded by her sons and daughters and grandchildren and other relatives who have been giving her support and consolation for her unexpected loss.
