Lando Norris delivered a stunning final qualifying lap Saturday to snatch pole position from Formula One championship leader Kimi Antonelli by just 0.011 seconds for Sunday’s Spanish Grand Prix at Madrid’s new Madring circuit.
Norris posted 1:31.824 to secure his third pole position of the 2026 season and the 19th of his Formula One career. Mercedes’ 20-year-old Antonelli qualified second, with Max Verstappen third, Lewis Hamilton fourth and Charles Leclerc fifth.
The result was particularly significant because Norris had not appeared to be the leading contender for pole during much of qualifying. He produced his decisive lap in the closing moments of Q3 to overturn Antonelli’s advantage.
McLaren team principal Andrea Stella described Norris’ performance as a “masterpiece.”
Antonelli, who leads the championship, had been among the fastest drivers throughout the weekend but could not match Norris’ final effort.
The qualifying session followed a difficult practice period for Ferrari. Hamilton crashed during final practice, damaging his Ferrari, but the seven-time world champion recovered to qualify fourth. Charles Leclerc will start fifth.
The new Madring circuit is expected to make Sunday’s race particularly challenging. Drivers have questioned the opportunities for overtaking, while tyre degradation could make strategy crucial.
Verstappen has expressed doubts about passing opportunities at the circuit, suggesting that tyre management and pit-stop strategy could determine the outcome.
For Norris, however, pole provides an immediate advantage. With overtaking expected to be difficult, maintaining the lead through the opening laps could prove critical.
Antonelli retains the championship advantage heading into Sunday’s race, but Norris’ qualifying performance gives McLaren an important opportunity to reduce the gap in what has become an increasingly competitive Formula One season.
