The Pan Caribbean Partnership against HIV and AIDS is calling for stronger action across the region to prevent suicide, following World Suicide Prevention Day on Thursday, September 10.
This year’s observance was held under the theme “Changing the Narrative on Suicide.”
PANCAP said suicide prevention must extend beyond hospitals and mental-health services and involve families, schools, workplaces, faith-based organisations and communities.
The organisation highlighted suicide mortality figures for several Caribbean countries.
According to 2021 data cited by PANCAP from the Pan American Health Organization, Guyana recorded an age-standardised suicide mortality rate of 26.4 deaths per 100,000 people, compared with 22.4 in Suriname and 11.6 in Trinidad and Tobago.
The figures have renewed attention on the need for prevention strategies across the region.
PANCAP said changing the narrative means creating communities in which people feel comfortable seeking help and discussing emotional distress without fear of stigma.
The organisation is encouraging greater inclusion and stronger community support.
For Guyana, the issue is particularly significant given its comparatively high reported suicide mortality rate.
PANCAP’s appeal therefore moves the discussion beyond the question of medical treatment to broader social responsibility.
The organisation argues that preventing suicide requires early intervention, stronger social connections and greater awareness of available support.
World Suicide Prevention Day is observed annually on September 10 to raise awareness of suicide and promote prevention efforts.
The 2026 observance has placed renewed emphasis on changing how societies discuss suicide — from silence and stigma toward openness, compassion and intervention.
