A prominent Bahamian artist known for turning ordinary T-shirts, hats and bags into distinctive works of art has died following a violent traffic crash in northwest Miami-Dade, leaving the Bahamas mourning the loss of a creative entrepreneur and mentor. Stefan Davis, founder of the Airbrush Junkies brand, was seriously injured in the Wednesday evening collision near Northwest 51st Terrace and Northwest 33rd Avenue. He was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center, where he later died.

The crash occurred after Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office deputies stopped a vehicle and determined that its driver, 21-year-old Luis Manuel Perez, was wanted by the U.S. military for desertion, authorities said. Deputies said Perez accelerated and fled from the traffic stop. Surveillance footage captured a vehicle travelling at high speed shortly before the collision. Perez was subsequently taken into custody and was being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center as of Thursday evening. Davis was driving another vehicle when the crash occurred.

For many Bahamians, however, Davis was far more than the victim of a traffic collision. He was a familiar figure at cultural events, Independence celebrations, community activities and Junkanoo gatherings, where his airbrush work became part of the visual fabric of Bahamian life.

His Airbrush Junkies business became a fixture at the Mall at Marathon and developed a following across the islands. His work transformed everyday items into customized pieces of art, helping turn a personal passion into a viable creative enterprise.

Friends and political leaders have also highlighted another part of Davis’ legacy: his willingness to teach. Free National Movement leader Michael Pintard described Davis as a trailblazer who built a business from his fascination with airbrush art while continuing to share his skills with younger Bahamians. The Ministry of Culture and Heritage also remembered him as an artistic force whose creativity helped celebrate Bahamian culture and identity.

His death has therefore struck beyond the art community, touching the country’s small-business and cultural sectors. Davis’ story was one of turning talent into enterprise at home while creating opportunities for others to learn the craft. His death in Miami has now transformed what should have been another visit to a city he enjoyed into a moment of national mourning. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
