The government is exploring new ways to facilitate vending along Woolford Avenue following the completion of the first phase of infrastructure upgrades along the corridor.

Minister of Local Government and Regional Development Priya Manickchand, accompanied by Permanent Secretary Miguel Choo-Kang, met with vendors on Monday to discuss their concerns and possible arrangements for vending in the area.

GENERAL NOTICE TO THE PUBLIC

During the engagement, the minister stressed that the displacement of vendors was not the objective of the infrastructure works.

Instead, the government is looking to restructure vending arrangements to balance vendors’ livelihoods with the wider development of Woolford Avenue.

The minister heard concerns and recommendations from vendors, while discussions focused on possible solutions, including more organised and standardised vending structures which will complement the upgraded surroundings.

The engagement also examined the relationship between roadside vendors and canteens operating at nearby schools, as well as challenges vendors face in obtaining the necessary approvals to operate.

Further consultations will be held with vendors, canteen operators and head teachers as the government works towards an arrangement that considers the interests of all parties while maintaining safety, order and the improvements made along the avenue.

Minister Manickchand reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to people-centred development, saying improvements to public spaces should also create opportunities for people who live and earn within those communities.

The government will continue working with stakeholders to advance development that improves public spaces, protects livelihoods and enhances the quality of life of all Guyanese.
