The University of Guyana (UG) will begin welcoming new and continuing students on Monday, August 31, 2026, with a week of blended orientation activities designed to help students transition confidently into university life.
Orientation for new students will run from August 31 to September 4, 2026, across the Turkeyen and Berbice campuses and the University’s IDCE regional locations. Continuing-student orientation will follow from September 9 to 11, 2026.
The University’s official Ceremonial Opening for the new academic year will take place on Friday, September 4, 2026, at the Ameena & Sattaur Gafoor Multipurpose Auditorium, Turkeyen Campus.
Based on current projections, UG expects to welcome approximately 5,000 new students, who will join more than 10,000 continuing students pursuing programmes across a wide range of academic disciplines. Registration remains ongoing.
Orientation Designed to Prepare Students for University Life
The Registry’s orientation sessions will begin at 9:00 a.m. daily and will be delivered in a blended format. New students may participate in person at the George Walcott Lecture Theatre, Turkeyen Campus, or join virtually after registering online.
The morning Registry sessions will be followed by faculty-specific orientation activities hosted by the University’s academic divisions. Students will receive the relevant registration and access information directly from their respective Faculties and through official University communication channels.
The sessions will introduce students to the University’s academic and administrative systems, policies, personnel, facilities and support services. Students enrolled in online and blended programmes will also receive guidance to help them navigate the University’s digital learning environment.
The programme is intended not simply to familiarise students with University procedures, but to provide them with the information, connections and practical support required to begin the academic year with confidence.

The formal Ceremonial Opening will begin at 2:00 p.m. at the Ameena & Sattaur Gafoor Multipurpose Auditorium.
The programme is expected to include presentations from senior University officials, including Chair of the Transitional Management Team Professor Stafford Griffith, Registrar Dr. Nigel Gravesande, Deputy Registrar Dr. Juneann Garnett and Senior Assistant Registrar Dr. Daniella King, along with cultural presentations by the University’s talent ambassadors.
