What Is the Best Morning Drink for Your Liver?

The best morning drink for your liver is black coffee.

Research shows that regularly drinking coffee is associated with a slower progression of liver disease. Evidence is mixed regarding coffee’s effects on metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), with some reports showing that regular coffee consumption reduces the risk of MASLD. In contrast, others indicate that coffee may slow its progression. MASLD occurs when excess fat accumulates in the liver. It affects 100 million Americans, according to one estimate.

Why Is Coffee the Best Morning Drink for Your Liver?

Coffee contains a unique mixture of nutrients, antioxidants, and caffeine, which may influence its effects on liver health. Chemical compounds found in coffee may provide antioxidant support that helps protect against damage and the accumulation of fat in the liver.

Still, many unknowns of how coffee supports liver health remain, and additional research in humans is necessary.

How Much Coffee to Drink for Liver Health

Research shows the greatest benefit with two or more cups of coffee per day. However, be mindful of your overall caffeine intake, as consuming more than 400 milligrams (mg) per day may have adverse health effects. The caffeine content of coffee varies depending on the preparation method. Generally, an 8-ounce cup of brewed drip coffee contains 95 mg of caffeine.

How to Prepare Coffee for Liver Health

According to one large analysis, all coffees—including ground, instant, and decaffeinated—reduced the risk of liver disease. Still, limited research exists on the best way to prepare coffee—such as pour-over, drip, French press, or espresso—for liver health.

Furthermore, what you add to your coffee may affect its liver benefits.

  • Sugar: Sugar-sweetened beverages are associated with worse liver health. Although many of the beverages reviewed in studies contain more sugar than you may add to your coffee, limiting added sugar still has a positive effect on liver health. Added sugar contributes to fatty liver, increasing the risk of MASLD. Even just one sugar-sweetened beverage per week—such as a store-bought sweetened morning coffee—can affect liver health.7
  • Dairy milk: Studies suggest that the type of milk you use influences its effects on liver health. Low-fat milk tends to track with lower MASLD or liver disease risk, while high-fat milk may be linked to worse liver outcomes.

Keep your coffee simple. Limit any added sugars and use low-fat milk if you need to add something to your coffee. (verywellhealth)
