The Charity waterfront in Region Two is set to undergo a major redevelopment as part of the government’s Model Village Initiative, with plans unveiled during a community engagement at the Charity Secondary School on Monday.
The redevelopment forms part of a broader vision to transform Charity, with plans to construct a new market facility following the decommissioning of the old Charity Market Centre.
The development is expected to create a modern commercial and recreational space while supporting tourism, local businesses and other economic activity in the community.
In addition, residents will witness upgrades to roads and drainage, improved lighting, fire hydrants and CCTV cameras, enhanced walkways as well as public spaces.
While updating residents on the plans, President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali said the initiative will create modern, sustainable and resilient communities where residents can live safely while accessing greater economic and recreational opportunities.
“We want our villages to be more than a place where we live, where opportunities and jobs are created, where we have quality recreation, streets of wellness, [and] spaces that are safe,” the president said.
The planned works cover approximately 271 acres and 753 households, with more than 30 kilometres of roads and over 26 kilometres of concrete drains identified for development.
President Ali said the initiative will also focus on creating opportunities for residents to become more involved in business and value-added production.
