In a strongly worded rebuke captured on video, Hana Mohamed, identified on social media as the sister of opposition leader Azruddin Mohamed, accused the Guyana Police Force of political harassment and questioned the timing of a police operation at her brother’s property while families continue searching for victims of the MV Barima tragedy.
Addressing supporters, Mohamed criticized what she described as a misuse of state resources at a time of national crisis.
“With probably the biggest tragedy ever to hit our country, this is where your tax dollars are going,” she said, alleging that more than 18 government officials had been deployed to her brother’s premises instead of assisting with search efforts at Iron Pond.
She argued that the operation reflected political priorities rather than the country’s urgent humanitarian needs, stating that resources should have been directed toward locating those still missing.
Mohamed also repeated allegations concerning President Irfaan Ali’s reported “mega farm,” while questioning the police inspection of buildings, workshops, all-terrain vehicles, and airboats located on the property. She characterized the exercise as politically motivated and designed for public spectacle.
“They were already in here,” she said, referring to the presence of officials at the premises before family members became fully aware of the operation. “This is what Guyana has descended to.”
She said the country should be mourning those affected by the ferry disaster rather than witnessing what she described as an operation targeting the opposition.
Speaking during a Facebook Live broadcast that attracted more than 9,000 viewers, Mohamed accused the Guyana Police Force of acting on political instructions, alleging that public confidence in the institution had been undermined.
“These resources should be sent out to Iron Pond to look for our brothers and sisters,” she said, calling for personnel and equipment to be redirected toward search and recovery operations.
The allegations made by Mohamed, including claims of political interference, misuse of public resources, and corruption, have not been independently verified. Likewise, the circumstances surrounding the police operation and the reasons for the deployment have not been independently confirmed.
At the time of publication, authorities had not publicly responded to Mohamed’s allegations or provided an explanation for the operation.
