Dear Editor,
Many Guyanese are asking legitimate questions about transparency, accountability and the stewardship of our nation’s wealth under the current administration.
President Irfaan Ali and his government have repeatedly spoken about good governance, yet public concern continues to grow over the source of financing for the President’s reported properties and his recently disclosed ranch, reportedly valued at approximately $2.2 billion. These are matters that deserve clear, comprehensive and independently verifiable explanations.
In any democracy, public officials—particularly the Head of State—must be prepared to account for significant assets and demonstrate that they have been acquired lawfully and transparently. Public confidence depends not only on compliance with the law but also on the appearance of integrity.
History reminds us that unchecked power and a lack of transparency can erode public trust. The experience of the Marcos family in the Philippines serves as a cautionary example of why accountability, disclosure and independent oversight are essential in every democracy.
Whether or not there has been any wrongdoing is a matter that should be established through transparency and, where appropriate, independent investigation—not speculation. The questions being raised by citizens will not disappear until they are answered with facts.
Guyanese deserve openness from those entrusted with managing the country’s unprecedented oil wealth. Accountability is not an attack on government; it is a cornerstone of democratic governance.
Yours truly,
Egland Gomes
