EnerMech Guyana Inc. has partnered with the Guyana Chess Federation (GCF) to sponsor the 2026 National Junior Chess Championship Qualifiers, reinforcing support for the development of young chess talent in Guyana.
The four-day qualifying tournament begins on Sunday, July 5, and runs until July 8 at Olympic House, Liliendaal, East Coast Demerara, with the venue provided by the Guyana Olympic Association.
The competition will determine the nine players who will advance to the National Junior Chess Championship finals from July 13 to 18, where they will challenge reigning National Junior Chess Champion Kyle Couchman for the 2026 title.
Hosted annually by the GCF, the National Junior Championships bring together players between the ages of seven and 20 to compete in Guyana’s premier junior chess competition.
Unlike the rapid-format age-group tournaments held earlier this year, the qualifiers will be played under the classical format, with each player receiving 90 minutes per game and a 30-second increment from the first move. The seven-round competition will follow the Swiss system, with two rounds scheduled daily at 9:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.
This year’s tournament introduces two competitive divisions for the first time.
Group A will feature the country’s more experienced junior players competing for the nine qualifying spots and the opportunity to challenge for the national title. The division is expected to include several of Guyana’s leading youth players, some of whom are preparing to represent the country at the Chess Olympiad in Uzbekistan and the XXXIV Pan American Youth Festival in Colombia.
Group B has been created to provide emerging players with an opportunity to compete for their own championship honours.
According to the GCF, expanded outreach programmes in schools over the past year are expected to increase participation in this year’s championships.
The top nine finishers in Group A will qualify for the National Junior Championship, while additional trophies will be awarded to the Best Female player, Best Under-14 and Best Under-12 competitors.
Group B will award trophies to the champion and second through fifth-place finishers, along with prizes for the Best Under-10 and Under-8 male and female players. Special awards will also be presented to the top three players from Priority Area Schools.
The tournament will be supervised by FIDE Arbiter John Lee and a team of arbiters. The top 12 boards will be broadcast live on Lichess.org, while pairings and standings will be available on Chess-results.com.
In announcing the sponsorship, the Guyana Chess Federation thanked EnerMech Guyana for supporting the growth of chess in the country.

The GCF also expressed appreciation to the Guyana Olympic Association for making Olympic House available for the tournament.
