Dear Editor,
Guyana’s PPP is implementing its ten-year plan, perceived as East Indian exceptionalism. The international community and multinational corporations are presented with an illusion of prosperity, while the less fortunate and the poor continue to face significant challenges, including hunger.
What actions is Leader of the Opposition Azruddin Mohamed taking, given his prominent constitutional position? The country requires more than symbolic representation; it demands political activism that influences government policy. Who recalls Bharrat Jagdeo’s statement that the PPP would render the country ungovernable under President David Granger?
It is imperative that Leader of the Opposition Azruddin Mohamed and the opposition parties demonstrate their commitment to driving political change, leadership, and democracy. Amanza Walton-Desir emphasized that politics is about service; it is crucial to define the recipients of that service.
Guyana risks becoming a one-party state and a dictatorship while opposition parties focus on symbolic actions. It is time for serious politics, centered on constitutional activism, to advocate for GECOM reform and meaningful change. Holding elections before implementing enhanced biometric identification and electoral reform may compromise democracy.
Yours truly,
Egland Gomes
