The International Decade for People of African Descent Assembly–Guyana (IDPADA-G)  acknowledges the decision of the Honourable Justice Roxane George, S.C., in the matter  concerning the Government’s discontinuation of the organization’s annual subvention.  The Court ruled that the Government acted improperly in abruptly terminating funding  to IDPADA-G and has ordered that the organization be paid the subventions due for the  remaining months of 2022.

In delivering her decision, the Chief Justice acknowledged the considerable delay in the  issuance of the judgment and offered an apology to the parties. The ruling brings closure  to a matter that has been of significant concern to IDPADA-G and to many members of  the Guyanese public who have followed the case closely.

The organization remains steadfast in its mission to advance the objectives of the United  Nations International Decade for People of African Descent and to promote the social,  cultural, economic, and developmental interests of people of African descent in Guyana.  Throughout this period, IDPADA-G has continued its work despite significant challenges  and remains committed to constructive engagement in the national interest.

IDPADA-G expresses its gratitude to its legal team, supporters, partner organizations,  and the many individuals who demonstrated confidence in the organization’s cause and  principles throughout these proceedings. Payment of the remainder of the 2022  subvention essentially represents outstanding debts to our employees, grantees, and service providers. We therefore look forward to the Government honouring and  expeditiously implementing the Court’s ruling, thereby enabling IDPADA-G to fulfil its  outstanding commitments and bring relief to the individuals and communities that have  borne significant hardship as a consequence of the discontinuation of the subvention.

As Guyana continues its journey toward greater inclusion, equity, and national  development, IDPADA-G hopes that this matter serves as a reminder of the importance of  respecting democratic institutions, safeguarding civil society, and ensuring that all  citizens and organizations are treated fairly under the law.
