The Ministry of Health has cautioned the public that any persons found facilitating or participating in mass gathering for the celebration of Mashramani on Tuesday without authorization will be prosecuted before the Court.
In a statement on its Facebook page hours before the February 23, 2020, Republic Day anniversary, the Ministry of Health stated: “Any Mashramani related events and mass gatherings that have not been approved by the COVID-19 National Task Force are prohibited. Persons found in breach of these measures will be prosecuted.”
As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, virtual cultural presentations are expected this year to mark the celebration. They will be broadcast live so that Guyanese can celebrate the occasion from the comfort of their homes. Calypso, Chutney and Soca Monarch competitions will also be held virtually in March.
Minister of Culture Youth and Sport, Charles Ramson has stated that this is so that there will be a balance in the interest of the public’s safety and in the interest of the celebration of Mashramani and Republic Day.
