We Invest In Nationhood (WIN) Member of Parliament Natasha Singh represented the parliamentary opposition at a flag-raising ceremony in Newark, New Jersey, as Guyanese in the diaspora marked Guyana’s 60th Independence Anniversary.

In a social media post following the event, Singh said she participated in the hoisting of the Golden Arrowhead during the City of Newark’s observance of Guyana’s Diamond Jubilee Independence celebrations, describing the occasion as “an extremely proud moment.”

She said she also delivered remarks at the ceremony, conveyed anniversary greetings on behalf of Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed, and accepted a recognition award presented during the event.

“I participated in the hoisting the Golden Arrowhead on the occasion of Guyana’s 60th Diamond Jubilee Independence Celebration in the City of Newark, New Jersey,” Singh wrote. “Thereafter I delivered remarks, extended warm anniversary greetings on behalf of the Leader of the Opposition Hon. Azruddin Mohamed and graciously accepted a recognition award.“

The event formed part of a series of activities held across North America by Guyanese diaspora organisations and local authorities to commemorate Guyana’s independence from Britain on May 26, 1966.

Newark, home to a sizeable Guyanese community, has over the years hosted cultural and civic events recognising Guyana’s national milestones and celebrating the contributions of Guyanese immigrants to the city and the wider State of New Jersey.

Singh expressed appreciation to the organisers and officials involved in the event, including Deputy Mayor DeFreitas and the Office of International Relations and Diaspora Affairs.

She also thanked members of the Guyanese community who hosted her during the visit, including Amabel Clement, whom she identified as a member of the first intake of the Guyana National Service, and Ervin Washington, a native of Bartica.

“I thank the organising committee, Deputy Mayor DeFreitas, Office of the International Relations and Diaspora Affairs and my Guyanese posse who hosted me,” Singh stated.

The WIN parliamentarian described the visit and participation in the independence observances as “an awesome experience.”

WIN, led by Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed, is the largest opposition party in Guyana’s 65-seat National Assembly. Following the 2025 General and Regional Elections, the party secured 16 of the 29 seats allocated to the opposition benches, making it the dominant opposition force in Parliament.

Guyana this year celebrated 60 years of independence under the theme of national pride and development, with commemorative activities held across the country and within diaspora communities around the world.
