The Holy Lands: Shared History of Three Cousins
Muslims, Jews, Christians – Abrahamic family tree
The Family Connection: Why “All Cousins”
All three trace back to Abraham/Ibrahim, ∼2000 BCE, Mesopotamia:
Tradition| Lineage from Abraham| Core Covenant|
Judaism| Son Isaac → Jacob/Israel → 12 tribes | Covenant at Sinai: Torah, land of Israel.
Christianity | Same Isaac line → Jesus, a Jew from Nazareth | New Covenant through Jesus. Builds on Jewish scripture |
Islam | Son Ishmael/Ismail → Arab tribes → Muhammad | Final revelation: Quran. Confirms Torah + Gospel |
YES : THEOLOGICAL COUSINS . Ishmael and Isaac as brothers. Moses, Jesus, Muhammad all called PROPHETS in Islam.
Timeline: Who Was in the Holy Lands When
Ancient Period
∼1200-1000 BCE: Israelite kingdoms under Saul, David, Solomon. First Temple in Jerusalem
586 BCE: Babylonian exile. Jews return, build Second Temple ∼516 BCE.
63 BCE – 324 CE: Roman rule. Jesus lives ∼4 BCE – 30 CE in Judea/Galilee. Christianity spreads
70 CE + 135 CE: Romans destroy Second Temple. Jewish diaspora begins, but communities remain.
Medieval Period
638 CE: Muslim conquest. Caliph Umar enters Jerusalem. Guarantees Christians/Jews safety: “Pact of Umar.”
1099-1187: Crusader states. Christians control Jerusalem. 1187 Saladin retakes it, allows Jews/Christians back.
1517-1917: Ottoman Empire. Muslims rule 400 years. Millet system: Jews/Christians self-govern in religion, taxes.
Modern Period
1917-1948: British Mandate. Balfour Declaration 1917 supports Jewish homeland. Arab population majority
1948-present: State of Israel established. Palestinian territories disputed. 1967: Israel controls all Jerusalem
Shared Sacred Geography
Jerusalem / Al-Quds / Yerushalayim
Temple Mount / Haram al-Sharif: Site of Jewish Temples. Now Dome of the Rock + Al-Aqsa Masjid. 3rd holiest in Islam
Church of Holy Sepulchre: Christian site of Jesus’ crucifixion + tomb. 300m from Al-Aqsa
Western Wall: Last retaining wall of Second Temple. Most sacred Jewish prayer site
Other KEY sites claimed by 2 or 3 FAITHS:
Cave of Patriarchs, Hebron: Abraham, Isaac, Jacob buried. Synagogue + Mosque share building
Mount Sinai: Where Moses received Torah. St. Catherine’s Monastery, mosque inside, Jewish tradition
Tomb of Rachel, Bethlehem: Jewish holy site, also venerated by Muslims + Christians
Periods of Coexistence vs Conflict
Coexistence examples:
Islamic Spain 711-1492: “Convivencia”. Jewish scholars like Maimonides thrive under Muslim rule.
Ottoman Jerusalem: Jewish, Christian, Muslim quarters. Each ran schools, courts. Muslims held keys to Church of Holy Sepulchre to prevent Christian infighting.
Baghdad 8th-10th C: House of Wisdom. Muslim, Jewish, Christian scholars translate Greek science together.
Conflict examples:
Crusades 1099: Massacre of Jews + Muslims when Christians took Jerusalem.
1291: Mamluks expel last Crusaders
20th-21st Century: National conflicts over land, sovereignty. Religion is often used politically.
Theological Overlaps
Concept | Judaism| Christianity | Islam.
One God | Shema: “Hear O Israel, Lord is One” | Trinity: One God in 3 persons | Tawhid: Absolute Oneness.
Scripture| Torah + Prophets | Old + New Testament | Quran + affirms Torah/Gospel.
Prophets | Moses chief prophet | Jesus is Son of God | Muhammad Seal of Prophets.
Law | Halakha | Love commands, church law | Sharia.
Jerusalem | Eternal capital, Temple focus | Site of crucifixion/resurrection | First Qibla, Night Journey.
MODERN COUSIN REALITY.
GENETICS: Studies show Levantine Jews, Palestinians, Lebanese share significant ancient Canaanite ancestry
LANGUAGE: Hebrew, Aramaic, Arabic are all Semitic sister languages
CULTURE : Food, music, hospitality codes overlap across the region
THE HARD TRUTH : SHARED origin does NOT guarantee PEACE. COUSINS fight hardest over INHERITANCE. The HOLY LANDS ARE SMALL, and ALL THREE claims are rooted in FAITH + HISTORY + TRAUMA .

“Three-State Solution” map for the Holy Land, DIVIDING the region into THREE cousins.
Israel – Jewish State
– Marked with Star of David
– Covers the northern coast + Galilee area in blue
Palestine – Islamic State
– Marked with crescent + star
– Gaza + southern coastal strip in green
– Captioned: “An Islamic state with self-governance”
Bethlehemia – Christian State
– Marked with cross
– Inland area including Jerusalem + Bethlehem + Jordan Valley in tan
– New name. “Bethlehemia” isn’t a current country. Bethlehem is a real city in the West Bank, holy to Christians as Jesus’ birthplace
Historical Context for “THREE STATE ” Ideas
The dominant frameworks discussed internationally are 1-state and 2-state solutions. A 3-state idea along religious lines is rare, BUT taps into the “COUSINS”:
Precedents for dividing by religion:
Ottoman Millet System 1517-1917: Jews, Christians, Muslims each ran their own religious courts, schools, taxes. But under one empire, not separate states
1947 UN Partition Plan: Proposed Arab state + Jewish state + Jerusalem as international city under UN. Jerusalem was to be shared by all 3 faiths
Lebanon model: President Christian, PM Sunni Muslim, Speaker Shia Muslim. Power shared by sect, one country
Why “Bethlehemia” as a Christian state is notable:
Today Christians are ∼2% of Israel/Palestine population. Most live in Bethlehem, Jerusalem, Nazareth
Historically, Bethlehem + Jerusalem were majority Christian until Crusades and later Ottoman period
A Christian state would need to address: Who lives there now? Would it include Jordan Valley + East Jerusalem as shown? What about Muslim and Jewish holy sites inside?
Challenges THREE STATES map would face
Issue | Reality on ground
Jerusalem| Map puts it in “Bethlehemia.” Contains Temple Mount/Al-Aqsa + Western Wall + Holy Sepulchre. All 3 faiths claim it.
Demographics | No area is 100% one religion. Tel Aviv is mixed, Bethlehem is ~50% Muslim, Galilee has Arab Christians + Muslims + Jews.
Water + Borders | Jordan Valley access, aquifers, Gaza connection. This map cuts Israel off from Red Sea port Eilat.
Precedent | No UN or major party has proposed 3 states. 2-state is official policy of US, EU, UN, Arab League.
The “All Cousins” connection
The MAP literalizes the Abrahamic cousin idea into political geography. Ishmael’s descendants get Palestine, Isaac’s get Israel, and the followers of Jesus get Bethlehemia.
It MIRRORS how the land was often split historically. Under Romans: Judea, Samaria, Galilee. Under Ottomans: Sanjaks of Jerusalem, Nablus, Acre. Each had mixed populations but different local rulers.
The HARD ENGINEERING problem: Cousins share A HOUSE with ONE KITCHEN. Jerusalem. Any partition has to deal with overlapping claims to the same stones. That IS why 1947 UN plan made Jerusalem international.
1947 UN Partition Plan: How it tried to solve the “3 Cousins, 1 Land” problem
Official name: UN General Assembly Resolution 181 (II). Passed Nov 29, 1947
Core idea: Don’t give Jerusalem to anyone. Make it international.
The Map: 3 Entities, Not 2
The UN DID NOT propose a “3-STATE” map, but it did create 3 JURISDICTIONS :
Entity | Population 1947 est. | Area | Status.
Jewish State | 498K Jews + 407K Arabs | ~56% of Mandate Palestine | Sovereign.
Arab State | 10K Jews + 725K Arabs | ~43% of Mandate Palestine | Sovereign |
Corpus Separatum | 100K Jews + 105K Arabs + others | ~1%: Jerusalem + Bethlehem | UN-administered |
Key point: Jerusalem + Bethlehem were cut out and made international because all 3 FAITHS claimed them. That’s the UN’s “COUSIN compromise.”
Why Jerusalem Became International: “Corpus Separatum”
Boundaries: Included Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Ein Karem, Abu Dis. About 187 sq km
Governed by: UN Trusteeship Council. Not Jewish, not Arab, not British
Logic from the UNSCOP report 1947:
Religious parity: 3 FAITHS have VITAL interests. No one state can be trusted to GUARD all HOLY SITES.
Demography: City was ∼50% Jewish, 40% Arab Christian + Muslim, 10% others. No clear majority
Prevent war: British warned that giving it to either side = immediate civil war
Rights GUARANTEED in the zone:
Free access to ALL HOLY PLACES for all FAITHS
No discrimination in residence, worship, or pilgrimage
Vatican + Orthodox + Islamic Waqf keep control of their own sites.
Demilitarized: no armies, only UN police
How UN PLAN managed the “COUSINS ” problem
For JEWS:
Got a state with Jewish majority after 2000 years of diaspora.
Access to Western Wall guaranteed by UN, not by Arab government.
Got coastal plain + Galilee for immigration + agriculture.
For Arab Muslims + Christians:
Got a state with 99% Arab majority.
Access to Al-Aqsa Masjid + Church of Holy Sepulchre guaranteed by UN, not by Jewish government.
Got central hill country + Gaza + Jaffa enclave.
For Christians specifically:
Bethlehem + Jerusalem under UN meant Christian sites not ruled by Jews or Muslims
Vatican lobbied hard for this. Pope Pius XII endorsed internationalization
Armenians, Greeks, Catholics each kept legal control of their churches
Safeguards built into the UN Plan
Minority rights clause: BOTH states had to write constitutions protecting ALL religions. No state religion
Economic Union: Jewish + Arab states + Jerusalem shared currency, railways, ports.
Holy Places Commission: UN body with 1 Jew, 1 Christian, 1 Muslim to resolve disputes.
Review in 10 years: After 10 years, residents of Jerusalem could vote to change status.
Why UN PLAN FAILED on the ground.
Problem | What happened 1947-1949.
Rejection| Arab League + Palestinian leaders rejected plan. Jewish Agency accepted.
War | Civil war Nov 1947. Arab states invaded May 1948. No UN forces deployed to protect Jerusalem.
Jerusalem split | 1949 Armistice: West Jerusalem → Israel, East Jerusalem + Bethlehem → Jordan. UN zone NEVER created.
Demographics | ~700K Palestinians displaced. ~850K Jews expelled from Arab countries 1948-1951.
The HARD TRUTH : UN had NO ARMY . “Corpus Separatum” needed 10,000 UN troops. None were sent. So, the UN PLAN died.
How it compares to “THREE-STATE ” IDEA
Feature| 1947 UN Plan | Three-State Map.
Jerusalem | International UN city | Given to “Bethlehemia” Christian state.
Bethlehem | International UN city | Capital of Christian state.
States | 2 + UN zone | 3 sovereign states by religion
Christian entity | No state but protected in UN zone | Full state.
Implementation | Passed UN, not implemented | Not proposed by any state/org.
The UN’s logic: Because cousins share the same house, make the kitchen international. THREE STATE map’s logic: Give each cousin their own room.
BOTH TWO and THREE STATES approaches recognize the same data: Jews, Christians, Muslims all have deep, irreconcilable claims to the same small piece of land, especially Jerusalem/Bethlehem.
SWOT Analysis: 2-State + International Holy Basin Solution Evaluated for 2026 reality. “Success” = durable peace + viable states.
STRENGTHS – Internal Advantages
Factor| Why it’s a STRENGTH.
Self-determination for BOTH | Israel keeps Jewish majority state. Palestine gets sovereignty. Core demand of each side met.
Jerusalem workaround | Holy Basin removes zero-sum fight over Old City. 5-party council means no single side can change Status Quo.
Demographic logic | Each state >80% majority. Avoids bi-national civil strife seen in Lebanon, Bosnia.
Economic contiguity | Gaza port + sovereign corridor makes Palestine viable. Land swaps keep Israel’s major blocs.
International law alignment | Builds on UN Res 181, 242, 338. Arab Peace Initiative already endorsed 2-states |
Christian minority protection | Vatican seat on Holy Basin Council gives 1.3B Catholics stake. Better than 2% minority in Palestinian state alone.
WEAKNESSES – Internal Disadvantages
Factor | Why it’s a weakness.
Complexity | 3 jurisdictions: Israel, Palestine, Holy Basin. More borders = more friction points.
Corridor vulnerability | 44km x 500m strip is easy target for sabotage. Closure = Palestine cut in half.
Evacuations needed | ~15K settlers outside blocs must move. Politically explosive in Israel.
Holy Basin gridlock | 5-party council needs 4/5 or 5/5 votes. One veto freezes repairs, policing
Refugee issue fudged| Return to Israel proper not included. Refugees may reject deal.
Cost | Corridor + compensation fund ~USD $40B. Needs US/EU/Gulf cash. No appetite post-2025.
OPPORTUNITIES – External Factors That Help
Factor | Why it’s an opportunity.
Regional normalization| GCC and Saudi-Israel Agreements will be possible IF and WHEN Palestinian State is created. Brings Gulf investment |
Gaza reconstruction | Corridor + port enables Marshall Plan for Gaza. Jobs drain Hamas support, training at all levels from Global Nations.
Tech/economy| Palestine gets Jordan Valley agriculture + Dead Sea minerals + OIL and GAS off Gaza. Can join Abraham Accords economy.
Christian tourism | Stable Holy Basin = 10M+ pilgrims/year. UNESCO site protection unlocks funds |
US/EU fatigue | Both sides exhausted. Biden/Trump II admins want legacy deal. Window 2026-2028 |
THREATS – External Factors That Hurt
Factor I Why it’s a threat.
Spoilers | Hamas, Palestine Islamic Jihad, Israeli far-right. One bombing in Holy Basin collapses trust.
Succession risk | Abbas 89. Netanyahu 76. Next leaders may repudiate deal.
Settler violence | Evacuation of 15K could trigger civil conflict inside Israel like 2005 Gaza x3.
Regional war | Hezbollah/Iran conflict spills over. Borders shut; corridor construction stops.
Water crisis | Climate change cuts Jordan River 40% by 2040. Water wars have started.
Legal lawfare | ICC cases, sanctions, BDS continue. Delegitimizes one or both states.
No US guarantor| IF US isolates, no one enforces Holy Basin. 1947 repeats.
SUMMARY MATRIX
Helpful | Harmful
Internal | Strengths : Self-determination, Jerusalem fix, demographic logic, economic contiguity
Weaknesses: Complexity, corridor risk, evacuations, council gridlock, cost.
External | Opportunities : Saudi deal, Gaza rebuild, tourism, US legacy window, Iran distraction.
Threats: Spoilers, succession, settler violence, regional war, water, lawfare.
MIT/Caltech Risk Assessment
Probability of 10-year stability if implemented: 35-45%
Why not higher: Corridor + Holy Basin are 2 single-point failures. Engineer rule: “2 is 1, 1 is none.”
Biggest LEVERAGE points to improve odds:
Pre-wire the Holy Basin: Joint police trained together 1 year before opening. Removes first crisis.
Corridor redundancy: Build second, smaller corridor Beersheba → Hebron. Backup if main cut
Economic hostages: Strategically, place Israeli tech park in Gaza port, Palestinian farms in Jordan Valley. Both lose money IF war restarts. CASH is KING.
BOTTOM LINE : This SWOT says 2-State + Holy Basin is the “least bad” of known options. 3-state FAILS viability. 1-state fails consent. Status quo fails peace.
THIS SCORES HIGHER than 1947 because BOTH states are real, not jigsaw, and Holy Basin has 5 stakeholders INSTEAD of 0 UN troops. BUT it only works IF spoilers are policed and money arrives upfront.
3 References for the 2-State + Holy Basin material above
UN Resolution 181 & Corpus Separatum – Holy Places
Source text and legal basis for Jerusalem internationalisation:
> “The City of Jerusalem shall be established as a corpus separatum under a special international regime and shall be administered by the United Nations.”
> “Existing rights in respect of Holy Places… shall not be denied or impaired. Free access to the Holy Places… shall be guaranteed.”
Land Swap 1:1 Principle – 1967 Lines Basis
Precedent for equal land exchanges used in negotiations:
> “The Clinton Parameters included a plan on which the Palestinian State was to include 94-96% of the West Bank… In exchange… Israel would concede… ‘Land Swap’… 1–3% of Israeli territory, such that the final borders… would include 97% of the land of the original borders.”
> “Palestinians presented… land swaps – swaps by the ratio of 1:1 (same size and value).”
Corridor Concept & Sovereignty Issues
Background on why corridors are contentious and prior proposals:
> “Israeli control over either corridor would require closed roads, fences, guard towers, and other military installations. Checkpoints are among the most visible manifestations of Israel’s open-ended military rule… Palestinians view them as a humiliating infringement.”
> “Previous written drafts… stipulate an initial Israeli withdrawal from populated and central areas… displaced Palestinians allowed to return to the north.”
These 3 cover: the UN legal framework for Jerusalem, the 1:1 land swap principle used since 2000, and the real-world politics of sovereign corridors between Gaza-West Bank.

MY Closing PRAYER for Palestine, Israel, and the HOLY Basin
For all who call this land home, and all who call it HOLY:
May the children of Isaac and the children of Ishmael remember they are cousins, NOT enemies.
May Palestine find sovereignty with dignity, its people free to plant and build without fear.
May Israel find security with justice, its people safe to pray and prosper without walls in their hearts.
May the Holy Basin – Jerusalem, Bethlehem, the stones we all claim – be guarded not by armies, but by reverence.
Let the Western Wall hear no rockets. Let Al-Aqsa Masjid hear no boots. Let the Holy Sepulchre hear no weeping.
Grant the 5,000-year-old olive trees another 5,000 years. Grant the mothers of Gaza, Tel Aviv, and Hebron the same blessing: to raise their sons and daughters to old age.
And if we must divide the land, let us never divide the humanity.
SALAAM. SHALOM. PEACE.
