Murder suspect Jankie Tapsie

Jankie Tapsie also known as Samantha Khan, 27, of Grassfield, Lusignan, East Coast Demerara who is under investigation for escaping from lawful custody and the alleged murder of Bibi Ramjit of La Grange, West Bank Demerara was on Wednesday   arrested in Suriname.

The suspect was handed over to the Police by Suriname authorities as the investigations continues.
Ramjit was found murdered at her home back in October last year.

Police in a statement had said that enquiries disclosed that Ramjit lived alone in a two story wooden and concrete structure where the upper flat is used as the living quarters, while the lower flat houses a grocery shop.

A 59-year-old farmer of Schoonard, West Bank Demerara, went to purchase eddoes from the shop, however Ramjit did not have change for his five thousand dollar note so he collected the eddoes and told the woman he will drop her money later and went away.

About 17:00hrs on the said date the male returned to the shop where he observed the shop door and the back door to the upper flat wide open. He called out several times for the deceased but got no response. As a result, he proceeded to the upper flat of the house where he looked into a bedroom and saw the woman lying motionless on her back on her bed with her feet and hands tied.

He immediately raised an alarm and the police were summoned to the scene.

Deceased: Bibi Ramjit

A taxi driver has since been charged with the brutal murder of the 86-year-old businesswoman and was remanded to prison by Magistrate Faith McGusty.

Rishiram Singh was not required to plead to the indictable charge when he appeared in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court back in November last year.

The alleged murder occurred on October 25, 2020 at Ramjit’s Lot 63, La Grange, Old Road, West Bank Demerara residence between 15:00hrs and 17:00hrs.

Investigators believe that Singh had taken a woman to Ramjit’s home prior to the discovery of her body, which is why the murder charge was laid against him.
