Guyana is set to make history as it officially joins the global observance of International Compost Awareness Week (ICAW) for the very first time, through a national initiative led by Waste To Wealth PBPT Caribbean.
As nations around the world seek practical solutions to climate change, waste management, food security, and sustainable development, Guyana now steps forward to champion composting as a transformative tool for environmental and economic progress.
International Compost Awareness Week is the largest and most comprehensive public education initiative dedicated to composting and organics recycling. Established in 1995 by the Compost Council of Canada, the observance is now celebrated globally during the first full week of May.
From May 3rd to May 9th, 2026, Waste To Wealth PBPT Caribbean will pioneer this National movement in Guyana under its bold national mission to help reduce landfill waste by 25% by 2030 through practical household composting solutions.
The 2026 international theme, “Compost! Feed the Soil that Feeds Us,” highlights the critical role compost plays in restoring soil health, strengthening agriculture, reducing waste, and supporting sustainable communities. The theme aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 15: Life on Land, which focuses on protecting and restoring terrestrial ecosystems.
Composting delivers measurable national benefits. It reduces methane emissions by diverting organic waste from landfill sites, improves soil quality, increases water retention, supports home gardening and food systems, and converts waste into a valuable natural resource.
Guyana’s Inaugural ICAW Feature Event at the National Park
To commemorate this milestone, Waste To Wealth PBPT Caribbean will host a Fun Composting Workshop and Live Demonstration on:Sunday, May 3rd, 2026 at the National Park 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM
This free family-focused event is designed to educate and activate youth, parents, schools, organizations, and communities with the practical skill of backyard composting.
Participants will learn how to stop discarding valuable organic resources such as kitchen peels, food scraps, cardboard, and yard waste, and instead transform them into nutrient-rich compost for farming, gardening, home food production, and income generation.
Families are encouraged to walk with 2 five-gallon buckets and one five-gallon square container to begin creating their own home composting system. With the right guidance, participants can begin producing quality compost in under twelve weeks.
The first twenty families to call 757-3855 and register will receive a complimentary backyard composting starter kit valued at $25,000.
This Sunday’s event is more than an awareness event. It is a national activation designed to educate households to build sustainable systems, reduce waste, and create new value from what was once discarded.
As part of the week’s activities, Guyanese citizens who are already composting or who are ready to begin are invited to join the newly launched Waste To Wealth Composting Registry.
This national hub will recognize and support individuals, families, farmers, schools, and communities who are actively helping to reduce landfill waste and build a cleaner Guyana through composting.
Registered participants will become part of a growing movement of environmental champions contributing to a greener, richer nation.
Waste To Wealth PBPT Caribbean is a Guyanese initiative focused on transforming waste into economic opportunity through practical training, partnerships, and community action.
The movement was founded by Rampertab Etwaria, who brings more than fifteen years of composting experience through agricultural operations and hands-on farm systems. His vision is to help Guyanese households see waste differently not as garbage, but as hidden wealth.
On April 12th, 2026, Waste To Wealth successfully hosted its inaugural training session, activating seven (7) families to begin converting household waste into Organic Miracle Garden Soil (OMGS). The mission is to help Guyanese households turn waste into wealth while contributing to a cleaner, greener, and richer nation.
Waste To Wealth PBPT Caribbean also extends sincere gratitude to Sterling Products Limited for its valued sponsorship and support of this national initiative.
