Another member of Guyana’s law enforcement has been ensnared in a rape allegation after a woman from the North West District filed a police report on Monday that she was raped by a police officer from the district while she was under the influence of alcohol.

A statement from the Guyana Police Force (GPF) Communications Unit on Tuesday provided details on the same.

According to the police, the incident is alleged to have taken place at 00:30hrs on February 15, 2021, at Kumaka, Moruca in the North West District.

Information received states that on February 14, 2021, about 16:00 hours the victim was consuming alcohol at a shop situated at Kumaka Water Front with some friends when the accused joined them in imbibing. About 22:00 hours on the said date the party moved to a next location and continued imbibing.

On February 15, 2021, at about 00:10 hours the victim further alleges that she became intoxicated and was escorted to her home by the accused and a female friend who then left her alone in the company of the accused.

The victim further stated that about 00:30 hours, being in a semi-conscious state, she realized she was on her verandah lying on her back naked and below the equally naked police officer who was having sex with her.

She pushed him off and raised an alarm which alerted the household which caused the accused to leave the premises. A report was filed to the police on February 15, 2021, at 16:40 hours and the accused has since been placed under close arrest. Investigations are ongoing.

This statement comes as on February 14, 2021, the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) confirmed that five of its ranks stationed at Mabaruma , North West District, have been accused of rape.

The five police officers have since been withdrawn from Mabaruma, even as GDF launches a Board of Inquiry into the incident.

“The conduct and professionalism of our ranks are premiere factors in our mission accomplishment. The Force will therefore spare no measure to ensure our ranks uphold our values and standards, and maintain the confidence of the communities which we are sworn to serve and defend,” the Defence Force said.
