A week-long orthopaedic outreach at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) is bringing renewed hope to dozens of patients living with severe mobility challenges, as local and overseas specialists carry out a series of complex procedures.

The initiative, being conducted in partnership with the U.S.-based Health and Education Relief Organisation (HERO), is delivering 38 surgeries between March 16 and 22, targeting both adult and paediatric patients affected by conditions that significantly limit movement and daily function.

Medical teams report that the procedures—ranging from anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstructions to clubfoot corrections and meniscal and labral repairs—are expected to significantly improve patients’ quality of life. Several of the operations are being performed using minimally invasive techniques, supported by recently introduced arthroscopic equipment at GPHC.

The visiting team, led by Dr. Wayne Bazil, began assessing patients shortly after arriving in Guyana earlier in March, working closely with local orthopaedic staff to identify suitable cases and prepare for surgery.

Hospital officials noted that the collaboration is not only addressing immediate medical needs but also helping to reduce reliance on overseas treatment, which can be costly and inaccessible for many patients. Shorter recovery times and improved long-term outcomes are among the anticipated benefits.

In addition to patient care, the mission is also focused on building local capacity. Guyanese medical personnel are receiving hands-on training in advanced orthopaedic techniques, a move aimed at strengthening the country’s ability to deliver specialised care independently.

HERO, founded by Guyanese doctors in the diaspora, has been conducting similar missions since 2007, facilitating hundreds of surgeries across Guyana. The current team includes Dr. Bazil, along with Dr. Rory Lewis, Dr. Ronald Chase, Dr. Claude Scott, Dr. Brody Dawkins, and Dr. Shanay Fischer.

Health officials say the ongoing collaboration reflects broader efforts to expand access to specialised services and enhance healthcare delivery across the country.
