By Mark DaCosta- In a significant display of solidarity, the Alliance for Change (AFC) has reaffirmed its support for a crucial developmental programme that has  enhanced cooperation between our nation and Cuba, and has benefited both territories. The AFC’s backing comes at a time when the political landscape remains divisive, especially concerning the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) administration’s handling of international partnerships. This endorsement not only indicates a commitment to strengthening bilateral ties but also highlights a growing dissatisfaction with the current government’s approach to foreign relations and developmental strategies.

The AFC has articulated in a recent statement that partnership with Cuba is essential for our country’s socio-economic growth. The party emphasised that “the programme is a testament to our commitment to building a better future for our people.” The importance of fostering relationships with neighbouring countries is underscored by the historical ties that have existed between our nation and Cuba, dating back several decades.

These ties blossomed during the Cold War, when both nations shared ideological alignments that fostered collaboration in various sectors, including education, healthcare, and cultural exchange. Such a foundation offers immense potential for mutual growth, particularly in light of today’s global challenges.

Guyana established diplomatic relations with Cuba on on December 8, 1972. Historically, the relationship between our country and Cuba was forged in the fires of revolutionary zeal, with both nations striving for independence and social justice. In the years that followed, Cuba provided invaluable assistance to our nation, notably by sending medical personnel and educators who played a pivotal role in the development of our healthcare and education systems. This legacy of cooperation has paved the way for continued interactions, yet the current government under the PPP seems to be neglecting these fruitful ties.

In a recent public address, the AFC posited that “while the PPP government remains fixated on its internal squabbles and political posturing, we must not lose sight of crucial regional partnerships.” The statement articulates a pressing call to action for the government, urging them to elevate diplomatic relations and actively engage with our Cuban counterparts. The AFC firmly believes that neglecting this relationship could stifle our nation’s progress and diminish our influence within the Caribbean community.

Critics of the PPP frequently point to a perceived indifference towards fostering international connections that could yield economic benefits. The AFC has been vocal about this, asserting that “the time has come for us to re-evaluate our diplomatic approaches and focus on what truly matters: the welfare of our citizens.” In their view, failure to do so would not only jeopardise current opportunities but also alienate our nation from potential partners eager to invest in our future.

Moreover, the PPP’s government approach, often viewed as prioritising political loyalty over merit, has resulted in discontent among various sectors of society. This has particularly rung true when examining their management of international programs. The AFC’s support for the program with Cuba emerges not just as a political stance but as a call for accountability, urging the government to genuinely commit to initiatives that promise authentic developmental benefits. “We will not sit idly by while our nation’s potential is squandered,” the AFC stated, inciting a rallying call for responsible governance focused on the overall wellbeing of citizens.

While the dynamics between our nation and Cuba are historically rooted, the future is heavily influenced by the decisions made by our current leaders. As the AFC continues to advocate for stronger ties, they have called for a reassessment of how the government engages in foreign relations. The need for strategic alliances has never been more pronounced, particularly as global economic interactions become increasingly complex.

As the political discourse surrounding this program unfolds, it will be essential for concerned citizens to scrutinise the commitments made by the PPP administration. Will they heed the AFC’s call for alignment with our neighbours and leverage the benefits that such cooperation can bring? Or will they continue to uphold the status quo that has often favoured political expediency over the genuine interests of our people? The time for introspection and action is now, and as conveyed by the AFC, “our country deserves a leadership that prioritises our future.” In the face of these challenges, it is vital for every citizen to remain engaged in the political dialogue that shapes the course of our nation’s destiny.
