A 26-year-old motorcyclist and his three-month-old baby died on Friday after the motorcycle he was riding collided head-on with a truck at Orangestein Public Road, East Bank Essequibo. His wife, who was also on the motorcycle, remains hospitalised with severe injuries.
Dead are Krishna “Mark” Persaud of Meten-Meer-Zorg, East Bank Essequibo, and his infant son, Lucas. Persaud’s wife, Deanna Persaud, 18, is receiving treatment at the De Kinderen Hospital.
Reports indicate that at about 11 a.m., Persaud, his wife and their baby were travelling to Parika when the motorcycle collided with a truck in front of the Blue Sky Shopping Mall at Orangestein.
In a statement issued Friday, Tropical Orchard Products Company Limited (TOPCO) confirmed that one of its trucks was involved in the accident.
“TOPCO confirms that one of its trucks was involved in a serious road accident earlier today at Orangestein Public Road, East Bank Essequibo,” the company said.
“We are deeply saddened to learn that the incident has resulted in the tragic loss of life, including that of a father and a child. We also understand that the mother is in critical condition.”
The company also expressed condolences to the grieving family.
“On behalf of the management and staff of TOPCO, we extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and loved ones affected by this devastating tragedy,” the statement said.
TOPCO said it is cooperating fully with the Guyana Police Force and other relevant authorities as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
“Out of respect for the grieving family and the integrity of the ongoing investigation, we will refrain from further comment until more information becomes available,” the company added.
