By Mark DaCosta- The main concern raised by the A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) in a statement, read by APNU parliamentarian Ganesh Mahipaul, is the alarming decline in governance, transparency, and democratic institutions in our nation under the current People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) administration. The APNU argues that, despite the economic advantages arising from our oil resources, the governance structures designed to uphold citizens’ rights are being progressively undermined. This assertion highlights the critical intersection between economic prosperity and the essential principles of democracy, emphasising that growth without transparency and accountability leads to a fractured society.

The APNU asserts that our country is experiencing significant economic growth due to its oil wealth, yet this development is overshadowed by a systematic deterioration of trust in democratic institutions. According to the statement read by Mahipaul, the governance patterns observed in recent years indicate a centralising power strategy wielded by the PPP/C, aiming to dominate public discourse while eroding independent checks and balances. The APNU’s statement frames the situation as increasingly dire, where the lack of access to unbiased media outlets further disrupts the democratic landscape.

According to APNU, the government’s control over state media exemplifies its undemocratic tendencies. The partnership has noted that the National Communications Network (NCN) has become a vehicle for the ruling party’s narratives, effectively silencing opposition voices. The European Union’s Election Observation Mission corroborates this view, revealing a severe imbalance in media coverage during the last elections, where state-owned outlets disproportionately favoured the PPP/C. The APNU emphasises that taxpayer-funded media should reflect the diversity of political opinions, rather than serve as a propaganda tool for a single party.

The APNU is also concerned about the implications of this biased media environment on the political landscape. As outlined in the statement delivered by Mahipaul, international observers have highlighted structural issues, including the misuse of state assets, inadequate campaign finance laws, and unequal media access, all of which grant the incumbent party an unfair edge. They argue that these systemic problems must be addressed to restore fairness and equity in the political arena, stating that the PPP/C’s failure to embrace recommended reforms jeopardises the integrity of our electoral processes.

The implications of this governance decline extend beyond media bias and electoral regulations; they infiltrate the very fabric of institutions meant to protect accountability and democratic ideals. The APNU has pointed out the irony in the PPP/C’s transformation from critic to perpetrator of poor governance, suggesting that the party’s historic calls for better practices during its time in opposition have fallen by the wayside now that it holds the reins of power. They stress the importance of ensuring a clean voter register and biometric verification ahead of local government elections to safeguard democratic integrity.

Such a stark narrative of governance is underscored by the notion that our nation’s newfound wealth should enhance rather than compromise democratic values. The APNU firmly believes that the risks associated with resource wealth, often termed the “resource curse,” should serve as a cautionary tale. Rather than allowing this wealth to centralise power and diminish institutional strength, it must be harnessed to fortify democracy and uplift all citizens, irrespective of their background or political affiliations. The APNU envisions a future where the government’s role is that of a facilitator of quality living standards and freedoms, not one perpetuating discrimination based on ethnicity or political loyalty.

In light of these issues, the APNU has launched a clarion call for urgent reforms to safeguard our democratic framework. They advocate for the establishment of clear guidelines governing state media to ensure fair coverage for every political entity, as well as robust campaign finance regulations to curtail the misuse of government resources. The party reiterates the necessity for all electoral bodies and constitutional institutions to function independently and transparently, fostering an environment where accountability is paramount.

Furthermore, the APNU highlights the significance of a responsive Parliament as an essential mechanism for governmental scrutiny and representation. Delays in forming parliamentary committees are viewed as detrimental to democratic principles, stalling progress on essential issues that affect our nation. The APNU’s position illuminates the fundamental belief that good governance is vital if our society is to truly function as a democracy.

By framing these concerns as not simply a government versus opposition matter, the APNU reinforces that the stakes are higher — the freedoms of all citizens and the future of democracy in our beloved country hang in the balance. The APNU Coalition pledges to defend democracy and encourage public involvement in shaping national policies. They urge civil society, the private sector, independent media, and the international community to unite in fostering and protecting our democratic institutions.

Their message encapsulates a profound conviction: our nation belongs to every Guyanese citizen, and it is imperative that our democracy serves the needs of all, ensuring that the institutions protecting our freedoms function equitably and effectively.
