A Budget of Borrowing and Silence

Dear Editor,

Earlier I referred to the popular article printed several decades ago entitled “Believe it or Not” by Ripley, so we have, believe it or not, a budget speech that consumed over six hours, minus snores from both sides of the house, trillions being borrowed and harvested from the several oil companies, but not a cent for underpaid public servants and teachers who are critical in the effort to mould the character of our youth, believe it or not.

Accountability Cannot Be Replaced by Charity

So, one hundred and eighteen million in cash in Guyana currency, plus US dollars, plus mercury, plus gold thanks to the INTERPOL operation, congratulations to the international network that exposed this massive illegal operation. Is this the tip of the iceberg? But remember the airstrip and facilities found some years ago, end of story, believe it or not.

Gold don’t rust so why are we facilitating legal and illegal extraction of our gold. Believe it or not in the second stanza of our national anthem we begin with the words “Green land of Guyana”, Guyanese be careful, those in charge of government don’t understand the concept; ‘today is sam, tomorrow is yam’, so we praise those who would like to run a country with massive resources such as ours, believe it or not.

When will we wake up, when will we speak up, so that all of the people benefit from the creator’s generosity? Believe it or not Guyanese must awake from their slumber and silence. Believe it or not some time ago we talked about the ‘sin of silence’.

Yours truly,
Elder Hamilton Green
