Dr Terrance Drew, Prime Minister of St Kitts and Nevis and Chair of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), will make an official visit to Trinidad and Tobago this week to meet with Prime Minister, Kamla Persad-Bissessar, and members of her ministerial team.

Dr Drew will be accompanied by CARICOM Secretary-General, Dr Carla Barnett. The engagement forms part of the Chair’s focus on face-to-face discussions with regional leaders on key regional priorities and cooperation.

The visit follows recent regional outreach by CARICOM’s leadership. Last week, Dr Drew and Dr Barnett met in Kingstown with the new Prime Minister of St Vincent and the Grenadines, Dr Godwin Friday.

CARICOM was founded on July 4, 1973, with the signing of the Treaty of Chaguaramas, to promote economic integration, coordination of foreign policy, and functional cooperation among Caribbean states. The founding member countries were Barbados, Guyana, Jamaica, and Trinidad and Tobago.

The organisation’s Founding Fathers are Errol Barrow of Barbados, Forbes Burnham of Guyana, Michael Manley of Jamaica, and Eric Williams of Trinidad and Tobago, whose leadership laid the foundation for Caribbean regional integration.

The upcoming visit to Trinidad and Tobago reflects CARICOM’s continued emphasis on strengthening regional dialogue and unity through direct engagement among heads of government.
