A test of Leadership, Anti Corruption Promises must be enforced by the president

The recent revelations and allegations surrounding Minister Susan Rodrigues have raised serious concern among Guyanese who expect honesty, transparency, and accountability from those entrusted with public office.

President Irfaan Ali has repeatedly pledged that his administration is committed to fighting corruption and ensuring that no one is above the law. This situation now represents a true test of that promise. To preserve public confidence and the integrity of governance, the President must urgently initiate a fully independent and impartial investigation into the source and legitimacy of the minister’s wealth. Anything short of this would weaken the government’s stated anti-corruption stance and undermine public trust.

These concerns cannot be ignored, downplayed, or silenced. When serious questions arise involving a sitting minister, leadership demands decisive, transparent, and principled action. If wrongdoing or abuse of office is established, the minister must be removed from office immediately. Accountability must be firm, consistent, and uncompromising.

At the same time, fairness and justice demand due process. Should the allegations prove unfounded, a transparent investigation would allow the minister’s name to be cleared and restore confidence. In the interim, however, Minister Rodrigues should consider stepping aside while the matter is examined, demonstrating respect for the office she holds and for the citizens she serves.

The fight against corruption must never be selective. Guyanese deserve leadership that does more than speak about integrity—they deserve leaders who act on it. No office, no title, and no political affiliation should place anyone beyond scrutiny.
