Chief Elections Officer (CEO) of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) Keith Lowenfield has submitted his report using the results of the recount of ballots cast at the March 2, General and Regional Elections.

In his report, the CEO stated that the People’s Progressive Party Civic recorded a total of 233,336 votes which gave them 33 seats in the National Assembly while the A Partnership for National Unity + Alliance for Change got 31 seats with a total of 217,920 votes.

The joiner parties, A New and United Guyana (ANUG), the Liberty and Justice Party (LJP) and The New Movement (TMN) got one seat with 5,214 votes.

The report comes days after the Appeal Court dismissed the Appeal filed by private citizen Misenga Jones, essentially upholding the ruling of the High Court, allowing GECOM to use the raw numbers only from the national vote recount to make a declaration of a president.

As a result of the CEO’s report, Chairman of GECOM, Justice (ret’d) Claudette Singh has declared PPP presidential candidate Irfaan Ali as President-elect.

The Chair also dispatched a letter to the Chancellor of the Judiciary (ag) Justice Yonette Cummings-Edwards informing her of the declaration and to have arrangements made for the swearing in of the new president.
