Miner injured after pit cave in at Iyana Backdam

A 28-year-old gold miner of Unity Square, Aruka River, North West District has been seriously injured following a mining pit cave in on Friday at Iyana Backdam, Barama River, North West District.

According to reports, the victim, Terence Anthony was working at Iyana Backdam on a land dredge when at about 12:00h the pit in which he was working caved in and covered him.

Anthony was rescued by his crew members and escorted to the Mabaruma Regional Hospital, where he was admitted. His condition is stable but serious.

Investigations are ongoing.
